What is IP Rating

9The ingress protection rating for any device is going to determine just how prone or safe that device is going to be from things such as water and dust. The higher the number the safer the device. When looking at the IP rating, you will find two different numbers. The one on the left is for the dust, while the one on the right is the one for liquids. Thus, if you were to see a rating of 53, you would be able to look at the table below and determine whether the microswitch would be right for your needs.

Dust
O = No protection at all
1 = Protects against solid objects greater then 50mm
2 = Protection from solid objects greater than 12mm
3 = Protection from solid objects greater than 2.5mm
4 = Protection from solid objects greater than 1mm
5 = Protection from some degree of dust
6 = Protection from all dust with no ingress

Water
O = No protection at all
1 = Protects against vertically falling liquid
2 = Protection from direct sprays of liquid up to 15” (vertical)
3 = Protection from direct sprays of liquid up to 60” (vertical)
4 = Protection from liquid sprayed from all directions with a limited amount of ingress
5 = Protection from low pressure jets of liquid with a limited amount of ingress
6 = Protection from strong pressure jets of liquid with a limited amount of ingress
7 = Immersion in liquid from 15cm to 1m
8 = Long periods of immersion in liquid

You should always consider just how you are going to be using your device and what type of environment it is going to be in during operation. This will help to give you a much better idea when you are trying to determine just what it is that you need. After all, you do not want to choose something that’s not going to be able to provide you with the right ingress protection.
